World Cup 2014: Luis Suarez Bite - FIFA Opens Disciplinary Proceedings, Uruguay's Star Player Could Exit Brazil Tournament Early
During the all-important Group E deciding match between Uruguay and Italy, the South American goal-scorer Luis Suarez bit Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini. Considering Suarez's history with the use of his teeth in matches and the video footage of the incident from this week, FIFA has officially opened proceedings into investigating and handling this situation. Unfortunately for Uruguay fans, Suarez could be kicked out the World Cup tournament.
"FIFA can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened against the player Luis Suárez of Uruguay," the organization said in a statement.
The organization's Vice-President, Jim Boyle, was the first to comment on the incident.
"There is no doubt Luis Suarez is a fantastic footballer but, once again, his actions have left him open to severe criticism," he said. "FIFA must investigate the incident seriously."
Like we said, this isn't the first time Suarez has used his jaws in a match. Click HERE to read about the last biting incident.
Speculation around this current biting incident suggests that Suarez could be booted from the tournament. Though that depends on when the hearing is held, which could be after Uruguay is out of the World Cup or the 2014 games come to an end. We'll have to see what FIFA decides.
Meanwhile, Suarez had the chance to address the bite seen 'round the world (but not be the ref) in the post-game press conference.
"These are just things that happen out on the pitch. It was just the two of us inside the area and he bumped into me with his shoulder, and that's how my eye got like this as well," he said. "There are things that happen on the pitch and you should not make such a big deal out of them."
For those of us that have seen the footage of the bite and know Suarez's history as a chomper, we beg to differ.
