Michelle Fairley Talks Lady Stoneheart Rumors in Game of Thrones
The major discussion headed into the Game of Thrones Season 4 finale focused on the presumed return of Catelyn Stark as Lady Stoneheart, her resurrected form in George R.R. Martin's books. Many fans assumed the character would show up at the end of the finale, but she never appeared.
The fervor leading into the finale made fans certain Michelle Fairley would return to the HBO show, and many were disappointed when that did not happen. The actress, who appeared on 24: Live Another Day, spoke to EW.com about the Lady Stoneheart rumors and revealed that she was unaware of them:
"I actually haven't seen any of that. I don't look that stuff up. I avoid it like the plague. I was totally unaware."
EW.com then told her of reports that the Game of Thrones bosses informed her Lady Stoneheart is not likely to ever appear. "Yeah, the character's dead," Fairley replied. "She's dead."
Finally, EW asked if she had a preference for Catelyn Stark. Should she return to life as Lady Stoneheart or should her character's arc end where it did at the Red Wedding?
"You respect the writers' decision. I knew the arc, and that was it. They can't stick to the books 100 percent. It's impossible-they only have 10 hours per season. They have got to keep it dramatic and exciting, and extraneous stuff along the way gets lost in order to maintain the quality of brilliant show."
