Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari FIRED - Brazil Manager Let Go After Poor 2014 World Cup Performance, 4th Place Finish & Germany Massacre Defeat
Germany took home gold at the 2014 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina in the final match, but the team's semifinal massacre over host country Brazil has left its mark in many ways. For instance, Brazil head coach Luiz Felipe Scolari is now out of a job after the embarrassing semifinal loss and eventually taking fourth place after Belgium beat them three to zero.
Scolari, who coached the 2002 Brazil squad to a World Cup title, said after the semifinal loss that he would leave his fate up to the federation.
"It's the president (of the confederation) who has to decide," he explained at the time. "We had already agreed that after the tournament we would hand over the command regardless of whether we won or lost. I will turn in a report to the president and he will analyze what he wants to do."
Well, the confederation decided and he's out, according to Globo.
In the past, confederation president Jose Maria Marin had stated that Scolari would remain the team's manager no matter what the outcome, but it looks like he changed his mind.
"My life goes on regardless," Scolari said after missing out on third place the Netherlands. He was booed out of the stadium at the end of the match, which will now be viewed as his final game as Brazil's head coach.
Meanwhile, Scolari was not the only scapegoat for these failures this year. Team star Fred was blamed for Brazil's poor performance, which probably helped him come to the conclusion that he would retire from international play. He did so after his team took fourth place in the World Cup.
