'The Strain' Recap: Kevin Durand Shows Up To Exterminate Rats In ‘The Box’
The Strain continues with its follow-up episode, as a vampire contagion has just been released from its coffin. New characters are introduced and back-story is hinted at in the stylishly scary 'The Box.'
In the opening teaser, we meet Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand), the bulked-up exterminator. While getting his gear ready before he goes to work, Vasiliy discovers a stray cat with a dead mouse in its mouth. The football-sized exterminator doesn't realize he has stumbled onto an important clue about the vampire epidemic.
Elsewhere, Gus (Miguel Gomez) has finally arrived at his destination with the package. Inside the white van is the giant missing coffin that Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) and his CDC team are looking for. Just when the delivery man gets the money from Thomas Eichorst (Richard Sammel), the coffin starts to move and howl at him.
The four survivors of the dead airplane have decided to band together and leave the quarantine base. Eph though has just found something very suspicious, when his team discovers a dead body. Unfortunately, Eph is unable to keep the survivors at bay because a cover-up is building and the news teams are reporting carbon monoxide poisoning.
Eichorst pays the elderly Abraham a visit at his jail cell. Eichorst promises the great game is already over and there is nothing the old vampire hunter can do. Abraham reminds Eichorst that he killed his friend, chopped his head off, and dumped his carcass in the North Sea.
While the survivors are rejoicing at their victory over Eph, Vasiliy shows up at the same restaurant where they're celebrating. The chef assures the exterminator that his kitchen is clean. Vasiliy then presents the dead rat he found to the people eating, which forces everyone to leave.
Of the survivors, the pilot is the only one who wants to be tested. Eph discovers a vicious worm inside the captain's bloodstream. When Goodweather drops a hint of blood into the vial, the vampire worm opens up its suckers. Though he wants to continue with his tests, Eph has to go to his Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
While Eph reveals the love he has for his son, Zach (Ben Hyland) at his AA meeting, his ex-wife and her new boy toy have other plans for the child. The boyfriend is actually trying to get along with the ex and the boy. Eph tries to convince Zach he will be there for him, even though this latest case is taking a lot of his time.
The other survivor, the rock star, is in the middle of his threesome when he feels the urge to bite someone. After licking his bloody lips, the musician wants more. He drops to the floor, licking the blood stains off with his tongue.
While Eph discovers the dead bodies are missing from the morgue, a lonely girl bathes his little girl in the tub. His own daughter releases her stinger and sucks the blood out of his neck.
The vampire plague is just beginning as Eph is slowly putting the clues together. Readers, what did you think of 'The Box?'
