Finally, the rumor ends.  Mariah Carey has been officially named as the new judge for American Idol Season 12 by FOX.  The pop legend is worth big bucks and her husband Nick Cannon joked last week saying that Idol wouldn't be able to afford Carey.  It was rumored that she'd be earning $17 million.  Apparently, they are willing to empty their pockets to have her in hopes that she'd raise the show's ratings.

Carey said in a statement, "As a singer, songwriter and producer, it's going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with American Idol. I'm currently in the studio working on my new album and it's first single, 'Triumphant,' which will be out early next month. I can't wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon."

American Idol executive producer Simon Fuller is excited to have Carey join the team and states, "We are proud to have one of the world's greatest-ever female singers join our show. Mariah defines the word 'Idol' and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her."

Carey is working on a new album now so it's the perfect timing for her to join American Idol as a judge.

Now that one seat is filled, who is fit to sit next to the legendary songstress?
