Serj Tankian, lead vocalist from System of a Down, releases own iPhone App I Am Serj
Upon the brink of an August reunion tour with his alternative metal/hard rock band System of a Down, along with the recent release of his third solo album Harakiri, Serj Tankian now makes it possible for fans to experience and create their own beat-synchronizing rhythms, all with just the touch of a button.
Serj Tankian is known for his distinctive role as a rock and roll musician - vocally, lyrically, and instrumentally. After he strayed from System of a Down and pursued a solo career, his sound took a uniquely orchestral turn, combining the likes of classic musical instruments with the brazen sounds of harsh electric guitar. With Harakiri, Tankian took his experimentation a step further by generating tunes through the use of iPad programs including iAmBeatBox, meshing instrumental loops and beats.
According to Tankian in an interview with Rolling Stone, the use of these programs was "almost like writing electronic music with rock elements, and using that as a way of designing a song." Influenced by this revolutionary way to produce innovative rock beats, Tankian teamed up with savageApps to offer his own tablet/smartphone program, I Am Serj.
The app is designed for experienced musicians and amateurs alike. For just $0.99, fans interested in achieving their own synchronized sound similar to Tankian's now have the ability to loop and mix different "gems" in order to produce a wholly unique sound of their own. Available on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, consumers can sync their own, self-made mixes into ringtones or upload them onto Facebook or SoundCloud.
According to Tankian in Rolling Stone magazine, "There are so many variations of bass, strings, pianos and guitars, it's quite interesting. There's even... some ethnic instruments on [the app] that we used on the record. There are a billion possible combinations."
