Panic! At The Disco, Westboro Baptist Church Beef: Band Challenges Hate Group (PHOTOS)
Panic! At The Disco turned a negative into a positive in a social media challenge to hate group The Westboro Baptist Church.
How did they get onto each other's radar in the first place? The back and forth started last week when Westboro created a parody based on the band's 2006 single, "I Write Sins Not Tragedies."
The ugly send up of the song - renamed "You Love Sin What a Tragedy" - contained the following lyrics:
"What a shame they're all f**s pimps or whores.
Haven't you people ever heard of obeying the word of god? No, you all rebel against the king of kings with a sense of pride and immorality.
You're all insane, f**s are profane"
Not content to leave well enough alone, the church announced it would picket Panic's show in Kansas City, Mo last weekend.
The band responded in kind with a tweet from frontman Brendon Urie who said, "Today @WBCSays is going to picket us. For every member of WBC that actually shows up we will donate $20 to @HRC #pride2014." HRC, or Human Rights Campaign, is an LGBT pride group.

The day of the show, only 13 protestors showed, which gave Panic a disappointing $260 tally. Westboro took to social media to gloat: "We counted, @PanicAtTheDisco! We had 13 picketers! But if we're being technical, you must count myriads of angels! pic.twitter.com/XlNC8Hmi3y" So, the band upped the ante: "Thank you @WBCSays for the update on the total amount you donated to @HRC today. $20X13= weak. We're going to make it an even $1000."

And topped it off with, "We will also be donating 5% of our total merch sales from this show to @HRC."

Former Star Trek actor and gay activist George Takei took to Facebook to applaud the band: "Now THIS is how you handle hatred with both grace and humor. Sorry Westboro. You got schooled by Panic! at the Disco."
