Monday Night Raw Preview 7/28/14: John Cena Responds to Brock Lesnar's SummerSlam Challenge
The July 28, 2014 edition of WWE's Monday Night Raw will emanate live from the Toyota Center in Houston at 8 p.m. Eastern and has the difficult task of following up last week's amazing episode that featured an arrest, a heel turn and the return of a certain client named Brock Lesnar.
Last week, Triple H was ready to name Randy Orton the No. 1 Contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship to face John Cena at SummerSlam on Aug. 17, but Roman Reigns attacked The Viper and he didn't get the title shot because that's how pro wrestling works. So instead, Paul Heyman popped up on stage to suggest a Plan C to the COO, his client Brock Lesnar. Triple H agreed, and the match was set. Heyman then cut a brilliant promo to end the show.
Cena was not on Raw last week due to a movie commitment, but he'll be back tonight to address Lesnar's challenge. What will the champ say to the Cenation now that The Beast Incarnate, the man who conquered the Undertaker's undefeated streak at WrestleMania, has put Cena and the belts square in his sights? How will he respond to Lesnar and Heyman? Remember, Lesnar beat Cena to a pulp in their last match at Extreme Rules in 2012 even though Cena got the win. Heyman has promised Lesnar would maim and injure Cena at SummerSlam, so will he make good on that promise?
Stephanie McMahon has also been advertised for the show to confront Brie Bella about the incident between them last week. Brie, who had a ticket as a fan, argued with Stephanie from the front row until the boss slapped her in the face. Later in the show, Brie returned with the police to arrest Stephanie in one of the best segments Raw has produced in quite a while.
Rumors have pointed to a match between Brie and Stephanie at SummerSlam, so could tonight be the start of that? Or does Stephanie have something else up her sleeve for her confrontation with the Bella twin? And will she be furious with her husband, Triple H, for leaving her to sit in prison while he dealt with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship situation?
And speaking of rumored SummerSlam matches, here's what the card looks like based on reports thus far. None of these matches are confirmed except for the Cena-Lesnar bout:
- John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship
- Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton
- Stephanie McMahon vs. Brie Bella
- Bray Wyatt vs. Chris Jericho
- Dean Ambrose vs. Seth Rollins
- AJ Lee vs. Paige for the Divas Championship
- The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler vs. Bo Dallas for the Intercontinental Championship
- Rusev vs. Jack Swagger in a Flag Match
That's a pretty stacked card that does not even include Cesaro, Sheamus, the WWE Tag Team Champions The Usos or their opponents, Luke Harper and Erick Rowan of the Wyatt Family. Could we see a build to any of these matches tonight on Raw? Will WWE make any of them official?
A likely candidate is AJ vs. Paige, as the Anti-Diva turned heel last week when she attacked the Divas Champion and viciously assaulted her around the ringside area. Now that Paige has taken off the gloves, will she get a shot at AJ at SummerSlam and possibly take back the Divas title? This feud could work wonderfully if the belt passes between the two Divas semi-frequently.
