[VIDEO] James Holmes Lives in an Alternative Reality, According to FBI Profiler
James Holmes, suspect of the Aurora, Colorado shooting that took place last Friday (July 20) appeared dazed and "out of it" in court on Monday (July 23). This is his first public appearance since he open fired at a local theatre at The Dark Knight Rises showing.
Former FBI profiler Brad Garrett who is currently an ABC News analyst said, "He's elsewhere. He's in some alternative reality that he's created. I also think that there's a combination of the reality of what has happened to him has set in, as to what it's done to himself as well as to the victims."
Holmes has been held in solitary confinement and came to the courtroom via an underground passageway.
Five family members of three victims also appeared in the courtroom. It was an emotional experience for them as they were able to see the alleged killer face to face.
Holmes' mental capacity was in question due to his behavior. He faded in and out throughout the court hearing, sometimes looking alert with sharp wide opened eyes and sometimes nodding off. When asked if he was on medication or drugs, Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said to reporters, "We would have no information about that."
It is still being decided whether prosecutors will pursue a death penalty case.
Chambers is still discussing with the victims and their family members.
"If the death penalty is sought, that's a very long process that impacts [victims and family members] for years," she explained.
