This weekend marks the premiere episode of Steven Soderbergh's highly anticipated new television series, The Knick, and from the looks of some new episode 1 preview photos and promo videos, we're in for a great time! Entitled "Method and Madness," this is our first look at a unique time in modern medicine and surgery - 1900. Clive Owen leads a remarkable cast in this intriguing new series from Cinemax. (SPOILERS to follow)

Owen stars as Dr. John Thackery, a genius in the world of progressive surgery that also has his personal demons to deal with. Clearly he has his issues, but he's the best of the best, especially after the passing of his mentor, Dr. J.M. Christiansen (Matt Frewer). Stepping into the role of chief surgeon, Thackery now has to deal with the bureaucracy as well as the operations of the hospital.

Cornelia Robertson (Juliet Rylance), the daughter of the hospital's benefactor, insists Thackery hire Algernon Edwards (André Holland) as his the assistant chief, but issues of race and Thackery's stubbornness get in the way. Will Edwards accept this treatment or fight back against Thackery, adding another form of progressiveness to the series?

The addition of Edwards certainly stirs up the rest of the staff, but overall the concern is setting breakthroughs in the world of surgery. With this in mind, will the other doctors accept an African American surgeon? Will patients even allow him to operate on them? Plus, how will see see Thackery reinvent surgery in 1900?

Most of these questions are sure to be answered tonight, but as the season progresses we'll expect more inquiries to arise. Check out the first few clips from the pilot episode right here to get a good taste of what's to come starting this weekend:
