'The Leftovers' Recap: Justin Theroux Searches For His Missing Father In 'Solace For Tired Feet'
HBO's The Leftovers continues with its highly riveting first season with 'Solace for Tired Feet.' Romance starts to bloom while an unsettling discovery takes place and the search for a wanted fugitive brings Mapleton to its knees.
Gladys, the murdered Guilty Remnant, has her face plastered on a poster. Cult members like her need saving, which the Reverend Matt Jamison (Christopher Eccleston) believes. Laurie Garvey (Amy Brenneman) is so distraught by the posters, she has to rip them apart. Suddenly she sees her daughter, Jill Garvey (Margaret Qualley) across the street, but their award silence is interrupted.
Jill is with her best friend Aimee (Emily Meade) and the others as they play a game. In the prank, someone has to stay inside a dirty refrigerator for 28 minutes. Jill stuffs herself inside, beating the record, but the door handle comes off.
Suffering from claustrophobia, Jill screams until the fridge is tipped over. It turns out her grandfather, Kevin Garvey Sr. (Scott Glenn) rescued her. Grandpa was supposed to be locked up inside an insane asylum, but he somehow escaped.
Everything is going well on the date between Kevin Garvey (Justin Theroux) and Nora Durst (Carrie Coon). Nora even knows how to defend herself as she hoses down the Guilty Remnants stalking her. Being made a fool of doesn't sit too well with Meg Abbott (Liv Tyler).
Kevin orders a manhunt for his father, who burned down a library before. While the search for the escaped maniac continues, Tommy Garvey (Chris Zylka) receives a call from Holy Wayne (Paterson Joseph). In his instructions, Wayne wants Tommy to leave the pregnant Christine and place money underneath a mailbox.
While listening to the police scanner, Kevin has a nightmare about dogs trapped inside a mailbox, his runaway son, and his dead ex-wife. By the time he snaps out of it, the police chief finds himself lying on the floor, with his hand bandaged. There is a strange dog barking loudly in his backyard.
The search for Garvey Sr. continues after he beats up one of the police officers. Jill actually finds her grandfather arguing with her new dog. He needs Jill to help him with 200 dollars, but their heart-to-heart conversation was actually a distraction.
Though his hands are cuffed, Kevin's crazy father manages to escape. While the manhunt keeps going, Tommy follows the driver who picked up the money from the mailbox. Tommy discovers another woman pregnant with Wayne's child.
After finding a jar full of money, Kevin makes a connection between his father and the reverend. Ordered to wait at a diner, Kevin finally meets with his father, who gives him a National Geographic issue. After Kevin denies his purpose, the father strikes him and starts a fight.
Kevin returns his crazy father to the asylum. Before he goes inside, the father hugs his son and tells him he's not letting him off that easy. Exhausted and downtrodden, Kevin goes to Nora, strips her clothes off, and takes her to bed. Meg immediately tells Laurie that Nora is screwing her ex-husband.
After being shot at, Tom returns to his hideout to find blood on the mattress. Christine is inside the bathtub, holding a crying baby in her arms
