'Game Of Thrones' Creator George R.R. Martin On Why There's Not More Gay Sex In His Novels
The public might be demanding more gay sexual encounters on Games of Thrones but don't expect George R.R. Martin's to incorporate that into his novels, just because the public is demanding it. The novelist opened up the Edinburgh Internation Book Festival about why there aren't more homosexual characters in his novels and if he plans on incorporating any into the upcoming books.
While there are gay characters in both the novels as well as the HBO series, Martin explains that since the story isn't told from their viewpoints that it doesn't make sense to including their sexual experiences in the books.
"I put gay characters in the books, but they're not the viewpoint characters so I did not have any explicit gay sex scenes in the early books," he said during the festival.
According to New Now Next, Martin admits that some of the fans of GoT have been pretty vocal about George including gay man-on-man action into both formats.
"I've had letters from fans who want me to present, particular, an explicit male sex scene- most of the letters come from women," he explains.
But while the public might be demanding it, Martin says to simply put it into his novel, where it might not fit, doesn't make much sense.
"I'm not going to do it just for the sake of doing it. If the plot lends itself to that, if one of my viewpoint characters is in a situation, then I'm not going to shy away from it. But you can't just insert things because everyone wants to see them."
