Al Gore vs Al Jazeera Beef: Current TV Sale Up For Grabs, Former U.S. Vice President Owed $65 million!
Current TV co-founders Al Gore and Joel Hyatt have slammed lawsuit against Al Jazeera for a fraud and breach-of-contract.The Former 45th U.S. Vice President claims the Jazeera Satellite Channel is withholding money, about $65 million still owed to him.
According to Bloomberg, Al Jazeera acquired Current TV, the progressive cable news station, from the acclaimed philanthropist back in 2013. The Doha-based channel wanted to extend its English-language service, hoping to gain more prominence amongst American viewers. A deal was settled, with both groups signing on the dotted line for the $500 million buyout.
The Hollywood Reporter states the lawsuit claims Al Jazeera illegally seized $65 million in escrow funds tied to their buyout. David Boies, the attorney who represented the running candidate in the memorable 2000 Florida election recount, reunites with the Nobel Peace Prize winner for another round.
Boises mentions his statement to the press, "Al Jazeera America wants to give itself a discount on the purchase price that was agreed to nearly two years ago. We are asking the Court to order Al Jazeera America to stop wrongfully withholding the escrow funds that belong to Current's former shareholders."
Basically, the co-founders want their money that's owed to him. It remains unclear though if the Media Network was actually trying to swindle profits from the previous owners, as the lawsuit claims.
An Al Jazeera spokesperson tells Huffington Post, "Our outside counsel is reviewing the complaint. We think it relates to a commercial dispute between former shareholders of Current Media and Al Jazeera America. We may have further comment once they've fully reviewed everything."
Things have completely gone sour between the two groups. We will have to wait and see if any of the claims are true, and if a settlement can be reached.
Al Gore and Joel Hyatt are still owed money from their Current TV buyout with Al Jazeera. Readers, what do you think of the lawsuit?
