The Truth About NBC’s New Comedy ‘Marry Me’

NBC has added a new comedy to its fall lineup, Marry Me, but what is the show really about? Hint: It's not all about being married.

Marry Me stars Casey Wilson as Annie and Ken Marino as Jake. The show premieres on Oct. 14 and will follow the young couple's awkward road to engagement and then further on into their marriage. At PaleyFest 2014, creator David Caspe revealed that the show is inspired by his real-life marriage to Casey (who also stars in the show).

The romantic comedy will focus largely on the banter between the newly engaged couple of Annie and Jake. The real-life couple of David and Casey gave everyone at the panel on Wednesday a taste of what the onscreen couple played by Ken and Casey will be like with a lot of back and forth jokes.

The Wrap reported on their back-and-forth: "'She can be a handful,' David joked of his wife several times, invoking several different meanings — including at least one sexual double entendre. 'You're coming off like a handful,' Casey eventually snapped back. 'I'm coming off like a breeze.'"

"That's because you're a terrific actress," David quickly responded.

Besides the playful banter, Marry Me will be a funny, romantic comedy that cuts out the drama and focuses on the couple.

"The cast and creator David Caspe assured viewers although Jake's proposal to Annie is a complete disaster, this is not a 'will they make it?' story," Zap2It reported.

"It would be depressing to wonder throughout the series if this couple was going to make it," lead actress Casey said at the Wednesday night panel.

Throughout the show, David hopes to bring in many of his former Happy Endings actors to guest star on the new comedy.

Marry Me hopes to follow me in some seriously funny footsteps. David joked, "viewers should think of the series as 'Seinfeld 2,' '31 Rock' or 'More Friends.'" Zap2It reported.

Last but, certainly not least, if you're not a big fan of the stereotypical romantic comedies you will still like this show, because it isn't all about the romance.

"It's not about marriage ... we just couldn't think of a better title," David said.
