Is Red Elizabeth’s Father? ‘The Blacklist’ Star James Spader Reveals What Red Is Doing This Season On NBC Series

The Blacklist returns for its second season on Sept. 22 and its leading man, James Spader (who plays Ray Reddington), reveals that there is a lot to see this season. The biggest question surrounds Elizabeth Keen and Red's relationship, but we won't have answers on that early in the season, according to James.

OK, we all know that Liz and Red's relationship is much deeper than just coworkers, but when will we find out if Red is actually Elizabeth's father? Not soon, unfortunately. "That story has not been extrapolated on," James said on set while filming episode four of The Blacklist's sophomore season.

"That's something to just let percolate for a bit. Elizabeth Keen has spoken of a memory of being in a fire when she was a child, and somebody pulled her out of that fire. She may be assuming that it's her father, but we've never said whether it's her father or not," TV Line reported.

In the season one finale, Liz's husband Tom (who was actually an undercover spy) told her that her father was still alive while he was dying. Before he could tell her anything else, Liz and Red fled the scene.

Despite the fact that this is one of fans most burning questions James questions if it will actually be the juiciest detail to come from season two. "I wonder whether that will continue to be the most important question that people ask as the show goes on, or whether the more immediate relationships and the nature of those relationships will eventually become more compelling. Given our show and what our show is, I don't think anything is as simple as it appears," James explained.

In addition to the Liz and Red storyline, Red's ultimate enemy, Berlin, will be back in season two. When the two do meet face-to-face, James said their dynamic will be "cautious."
