Rose McGowan’s Directorial Debut In ‘Dawn’ Sparks New Los Angeles Festival

Charmed alum Rose McGowan will make her first directorial debut in Dawn. The 41-year-old actress will step behind the camera in the upcoming independent film that will be featured in a new Los Angeles festival.

Rose is known for roles as Paige Matthews in Charmed, Courtney in Jawbreaker and Josie Acosta in Chosen, but now she is taking on a different role as a director for Dawn, which is about a young girl's growing sexuality and her desire to explore the unknown.

"Dawn (Tara Barr) is a quiet young teenager living in Kennedy-era America who longs for something or someone to free her from her sheltered life. When she strikes up an innocent flirtation with the boy who works at her local gas station (Reiley McClendon), she thinks that he is perhaps the answer to her teenage dreams," the production company said in a press release. "Though when she invites the boy and his friends into her otherwise cloistered world, she gets a lot more than she bargained for."

RSA/Black Dog Films announced on Tuesday that the film, which had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival, will have an Oscar-qualifying run at the Downtown Independent in Los Angeles for a week starting on Sept. 19. During its run at the LA theater, the film will play with one other feature every night for the first annual "Dawn Festival."

"I'm curating a festival of directors that have given their lead women a strong voice. These stories could have been told with men in the title characters, but these directors showed us what happens when you break stereotypes. They have inspired me as a woman, as a director and as a person", Rose said in a statement.

The Dawn Festival will also include classics, which were all chosen by Rose to accompany her film, like Sixteen Candles, The Parent Trap, Thelma & Louise and Carrie. Each film featured in the festival star strong performances by women according to Rose. The other three films are Rosemary's Baby, The Silence of the Lambs and Harld and Maude.
