'Boardwalk Empire' Recap: 'What Jesus Said' Presents Steve Buscemi, Kelly Macdonald's Next Big Move!
Terence Winters' gangster drama, Boardwalk Empire, kicks it up a notch for its fifth and final season on HBO. In the aftermath of season four's finale, we see what has happened with Steve Buscemi (Nucky Thompson), Kelly Macdonald (Margaret Thompson), and Michael K. Wiliams (Chalky White) in the episode, 'What Jesus Said?'
The opening starts with Chalky (Williams) and his prison escapee breaking into a seemingly empty home. The two fugitives are caught by surprise by a mother and daughter. They hold the homeowners hostage while trying to figure out where they hold their cash.
We find Margaret (Macdonald) being interrogated about the missing files. Mob boss Arnold Rothstein passed away and Margaret's boss was stealing money from his alias accounts. Margaret is in deep trouble because her signature is connected to Rothstein's papers, making her an accomplice.
Nucky has a get-together with Joe Kennedy (Matt Letscher). This is all part of Nucky's plan to convince the senator to join his Bacardi Rum plan. If Prohibition is repealed, they can rake in the profits as being the first ones to bring in Baracardi into the dry States.
Kennedy is a smooth-talking and persuasive politician. Nucky has a difficult time reading him, taking one step further, then a step backwards. They end up at a Nucky's nightclub, where Joe is infatuated with a provocative stripper.
In Nucky's flashbacks, Young Nucky (Nolan Lyons) is smitten with a girl his age, but her parents are from a wealthy class. The Commodore (John Ellsion Conlee) has promoted him to bellboy and one of his duties is to give a guest flowers every morning to his mistress.
While Young Nucky tries to impress his first crush, the mistress ends up dead in her bed, murdered by her lover. Disturbed by the news, the boy doesn't understand what happened, because he truly loved her. Young Nucky gets a love letter from the girl he likes, who wishes he kissed her.
Lucky Luciano (Vincent Piazza) pays a visit to Dr. Valentin Narcisse (Jeffry Wright) in Harlem. Narcisse will not pay Lucky for protection and rejects his offer. Luciano retaliates by having his hit-men take down one of the doctor's brothels.
Margaret meets Rothstein's wife, who remembers her from Nucky's Egyptian-themed party. With a lawsuit impending, Rothstein's wife wants Margaret to feel her humiliation and have her name smeared too. She won't back down until everyone knows she is married to a mobster.
Joe wants to know one thing from Nucky. Why does he want the Bacardi Rum deal so bad? Nucky responds, "I want to leave something behind."
During the night, Nucky wakes up from his dream and finds Margaret sitting in his chair.
