VIDEO: Paula Deen Speaks Out About Her Racist Scandal Last Year On 'Today' Show
One year after the detrimental scandal that hit cooking star Paula Deen, the former Food Network star chatted with NBC's Matt Lauer on the Today show Wednesday.
The Southern belle turned cooking sensation spoke out today regarding her racist scandal that happened in June 2013. Last year on the Today show she had a near meltdown "apologizing" for using racists slurs 30 year ago stating, "I is what I is"
After a leaked deposition revealed her using the n-word and planned to use a "Southern plantation-styled" wedding with African American servants. Deen sat with her two sons to talk about the year's journey.
"That was a woman in trauma, shock, trying to understand what happened," she said regarding last year's Today show appearance. "And you know the cold hard fact, Matt, is I probably should not have been here. I should have been home, maybe under the care of a doctor."
Regarding her time spent away from the kitchen was a time of reflection and healing for Deen. "I had to remove myself and sit quietly so that I could think and see things from all angles," she shared. "I've learned so much over the year. I really feel like it's gonna require another book. We are working on a documentary, because I feel like everybody needs to know the whole entire story."
Deen knows that her words hurt a lot of people, not only the ones that she personally affected, but the rest of America who has experienced racist remarks at some time or another.
"My words hurt people," Deen said. "They disappointed people, and quite frankly I disappointed myself. And for that I'm so sorry. I'm so, so sorry for the hurt I caused people. Because it went deep."
Some things to look forward to with Deen are a documentary explaining her side of the story.
"I really feel it's going to require another book," she said.
