Zach Braff To Direct MTV Dark Comedy Pilot: ‘Scrubs’ Star Follows ‘Garden State,’ ‘Wish I Was Here’ With ‘Self Promotion’
It's been noted by The Hollywood Reporter that MTV is gearing up to boost it's pilot season. Step one: hiring Scrubs, Garden State and Wish I Was Here star Zach Braff to director a new dark comedy pilot.
Titled Self Promotion, the television script is being penned by writer Mark Bianculli along with Awkward's Steve Yockey acting as executive producer. Adding Braff onboard the behind-the-scenes team undoubtedly adds to the pilot's potential and chances of going to series; not only for name recognition but also because Braff has proven himself time and time again to be a noteworthy director.
In the past, the former Garden State writer-director-actor has had multiple wins under his belt in the director's chair. Braff directed a number of episodes of his career-making series Scrubs along with the newly released Wish I Was Here, which was released in theaters this past July 2014. And, of course, the aforementioned Garden State.
THR reports that Self Promotion follows an overworked underpaid assistant Katie Preston who soon discovers that her horribly dreadful boss is suddenly missing. As things quickly get dark, Preston believes she'll be the one authorities are after considering she covered up the crime scene. She then begins filling in for her missing boss, calling the shots at work, all in order to find out what went down and exonerate herself.
Self Promotion, a play off Preston "self-promoting" herself to her boss' role, is the third pilot in the works for the Viacom-owned MTV network. The others including the Ken Jeong-led Ken Jeong Made Me Do It, an obvious comedy, as well as the drama Scream.
