Jessie J Releasing New Album: ‘Sweet Talker' Considers Herself A Feminist

Recording artist, Jessie J, exploded onto the scene with hit collaboration "Bang Bang" featuring Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj this summer. Although the British star has just started blowing up in the US, she is a star back at home. According to Billboard, "Bang Bang" reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, which was her highest chart position as a recording artist. Her biggest hit overall was a co-writing credit on Miley Cyrus' "Party in the USA," which reached No. 2.

The singer's new album, Sweet Talker is set to release on October 13 in the U.K. and October 14 worldwide. This is a vocally raw, pop album with big beats from Diplo, Max Martin, The Dream, and Tricky Stewart. "I allowed other people to come in and push my control and make me uncomfortable," she says. "After my second album, I'm not afraid of the pain."

Her 2010 debut single, "Do It Like A Dude," features lyrics about abandoning conventional "girly" behavior at the club. With a title like that, one must wonder: Is Jessie J a feminist?

"Yes," the star told HuffPost Entertainment on Wednesday night. "I think I do. Not an extreme, but definitely someone that thinks that equal rights should be a normality. I believe in making sure that I understand my responsibility of being a woman, and what I should stand for, and being confident and not standing down for any ego or suit."

Jessie J also opened up to HuffPost Entertainment about industry sexism and working with other Hollywood powerhouses, especially Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj.

"One thing that I really observed with Ariana is how impressed I was with her age and her work ethic. She really cares. And she sings constantly. I love that because that's how I saw myself when I was her age; that the vocals were the most important thing. I admire that. So I really, really learned from her. I was like, 'I need to be consistent. Come on, you can do this.'"

As for Minaj, Jessie J was equally effusive with her praise. "She's the most grounded, concentrated person on what she's doing. She's really funny. She did an English accent a lot when I was around her so every time she did an English accent I did an American one. It was weird, but I liked it," she said.
