Rihanna vs. Spice Girls Beef: Mel C Deems Drake's Ex 'Raunchy,' 'Sporty Spice' Bans Young Daughter's 'Idol,' Will RiRi Respond To 'Bad Role Model' Diss?
Some fans deem Rihanna's sexuality a bit too over-the-top. Even Melanie Chisholm - aka, Sporty Spice.
Although back in the 1990s, her look was sometimes considered "too sexy" for young girls to idolize:
But now that she's a mom, the former girl band superstar understand why it's important to ignore the "vulgar" side of celebrity and fame.
In a recent interview with Radio Times, (via UK's Daily Mail), the 40-year-old songstress explains why she won't let her five-year-old daughter Scarlet listen to RiRi - or watch her provacative music videos:
"My five-year-old daughter loves Rihanna... But she has no idea what her idol looks like, because there is little footage of Rihanna that I'm happy for her to see. It's a shame that a talented, successful woman expresses herself in such an overtly sexual way. Not that we can boil the problem down to one female singer baring her flesh. We need to have a bigger conversation about society's obsession with celebrity. It's vulgar and narcissistic and I worry about how it affects young girls."
Does Drake's ex embody the "girl power" Chisholm and her former Spice Girls promoted back in the day? According to Chisholm, her and bandmates Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Emma Bunton, and Geri Halliwell were never "interested in pleasing men" - they made music meant to positiviely influence female fans.
According to the "Wannabe" starlet, "We need female artists to be authentic. Of course, a 20-something woman has feelings and experiences that she wants to express - but you also have to be mindful of your responsibility to young fans... We need to have a bigger conversation about society's obsession with celebrity. It's vulgar and narcissistic and I worry about how it affects young girls."
Chisholm has a young daughter with longtime partner Thomas Starr. The couple split back in 2012.
