Ronald Koeman's Southampton 'Embarrass' Gus Poyet's Sunderland With Near Record-Breaking 8-0 Premier League Win
For Ronald Koeman and Gus Poyet, their game against one another will be one they'll remember for the rest of their lives, but for different reasons. Their sides faced off in the English Premier League and it was tipped to be a close game, but it ended up anything but. Southampton won, beating Sunderland 8-0, and Southampton nearly broke the EPL record. Both managers spoke after the game, but the mood was different between the two. Poyet hit out at his team, saying, "It's the most embarrassing time I've had on a football pitch.
"I cannot watch it again. I learned a lot about the players — the bad side as some gave up and I know who they are for the future. It's going to be a difficult week," he continued. "The players who are on the pitch next week are going to do something about it. I feel very sorry for the fans, they came a long way to see a very difficult game today."
Koeman didn't overreact, but he explained, "That 8-0 is not a normal result. I was surprised after 20 minutes about the score. We were 2-0 up and we didn't start the game well. Sunderland were dominating and we had problems. Lucky the first one, the own goal, gave us a little bit more confidence and we woke up after that."
Will Southampton continue their impressive form, and how can Sunderland bounce back from this heavy defeat? Their next games will tell us all we need to know.
