'Doctor Who' Vs 'Sherlock' - Season 8's "In the Forest of the Night" Episode Writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce Compares Steven Moffat's BBC Shows And Actors
Considering Steven Moffat is the showrunner for two very popular niche genre TV series in Britain, it's hard not to compare the two - especially considering the leads he writes for. With Sherlock and Doctor Who on his resume and Benedict Cumberbatch and Peter Capaldi starring in these shows respectfully, are there any obvious parallels between the characters? According to season 8 "In the Forest of the Night" episode writer Frank Cottrell-Boyce, Capaldi's Doctor is "more like Sherlock" than the previous time-travelers (namely Matt Smith).
It might be easy criticism to draw parallels between two successful shows with a similar fan-base and the same executive producer, but Cottrell-Boyce means no harm in his comparison. He's actually comparing Capaldi to the character that Benedict portrays. In fact, this is more of a compliment considering how beloved Cumberbatch's Holmes has become over the years. Moffat even won a Grammy award for his work on the series!
"The key note Steven gave was that whereas the other Doctors tell you what they're doing, he'll keep things to himself for a while," the acclaimed writer told RadioTimes.com. "Matt would tell you everything, but [Capaldi] keeps the process to himself until he acts on it. I guess he's more like Sherlock Holmes. The wheels are turning in his head but he's not really letting you in on the process."
So as you can tell, this comment wasn't really meant as a jab or to stir up any controversy. Basically, Cottrell-Boyce was just pointing out that the 12th Doctor is portrayed by a man that is just like another great fictional character!
