Keep a Child Alive was founded in 2003 and its mission is:
"Keep a Child Alive believes that every person has the right to health care and that all children deserve a future. We support innovative, community-led responses that increase access to life-saving HIV treatment and care, nutritious food, and loving support for children and families living with and affected by HIV in Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, Uganda, and India.
"We provide more than just the medicine needed to fight HIV. We provide the essential medical care, nutritious food and love that help people thrive. We help with the things many of us take for granted, but that can make all the difference. A hot meal. A bed. A roof. A ride. A smile.
"Keep a Child Alive is different: we are a small, nimble organization, which allows us to go where the need is greatest and to support community-owned solutions. We move boldly and with urgency in our work, and, with Alicia Keys as our global ambassador, we use our voice to raise awareness and rally resources to ensure that children, families and communities live with dignity and have hope for their future."
In 2013, the Black Ball raised $4 million and featured Carole King and Pharrell.
