'The Walking Dead' Actress Laurie Holden Helps Rescue Colombian Sex Slaves
The former The Walking Dead actress Laurie Holden has recently been involved in an undercover sting operation in Colombia to take down sex traffickers.
The mission has been dubbed Operation Underground Railroad, according to ABC News. Their mission was profiled on Nightline (see video below) and is described by bringing down notorious sex trafficker Marcus Bronschidle.
"When they first showed up, some of them looked really terrified. I talked to a few of them and asked them how old they were. Some were 12. Some were 13. Most were 14," Holden said.
Holden's mission was to distract the girls while the team exchanged money with Bronschidle.
"One of the girls came in, embraced me, started to cry, then I started to cry," Holden said in a post-sting interview. "What makes me sad is that yes, we got four traffickers, and I hope they fry, but what makes me sad is that so many of these little girls, they don't know any different. I know we did some good tonight. But I know that more needs to be done."
The operation was a creation of former CIA and Homeland Security agent Tim Ballard, who was responsible for recruiting the team of volunteers that included Holden.
"I had a pretty good disguise — I had a wig and glasses," said Holden in an interview with CBC News. "I think having myself and this other lovely woman, Krista, who is a cross-fit trainer, we were like the motherly figures who were able to comfort them."
Holden continued. "We have to protect those who can't protect themselves and it's not about writing a check. That's great, but I've seen [child sex trafficking] firsthand and I can't get it out of my head, I'm just going to keep going until the day I die."
