ABC's 'The Goldbergs' Will Pay Tribute To 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' In Season Two

The Goldbergs takes place in the 1980s, and there have been some amazing moments paying tribute to that era, including Star Wars episodes and The Goonies, and now Ferris Bueller is coming to the comedy. This season on the ABC show, a Ferris Bueller's Day Off tribute is in the works. The Ferris storyline will be part of the upcoming John Hughes episode in Season 2, TV Line learned.

"Ferris Bueller exuded cool. He got the girl, he had the epic day off, he outsmarted his teachers, parents, siblings and classmates," creator Adam F. Goldberg said in a statement. "And the way John Hughes captured that epic day of fun, it was the obvious choice to send the Goldbergs on a quest to recreate that awesome day off."

So what sparked Adam's love of Ferris? The fact that his older brother Barry also liked him growing up!

"My older brother Barry and I had little in common growing up, but we shared an equal obsession with Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Watching it over and over was how we bonded and we quoted lines from it as if it was our secret language," Adam revealed in the statement.

"We saw ourselves in the iconic character of Ferris, the popular schemer who could do no wrong. However, we all knew the reality — neither of us was a Ferris. Sadly, we both more resembled Cameron, Ferris's hapless sidekick," he said.

Earlier this summer, TV Line reported that The Goldbergs team was working hard to figure out what should be included in the John Hughes tribute episode, which will air at some point in Season 2 of the hit series.

In June, Adam told the publication that he had yet to decide on which film would honor John Hughes, but he did say, "But it's going to be very difficult to shoot and very expensive. So it'll be a real nightmare, but hopefully, it'll turn out great."

Wendi McLendon-Covey, who plays mother Beverly Goldberg in the series, was holding out for a Molly Ringwald film to work into the show.

"I love Sixteen Candles. But it seems like The Breakfast Club might be a better fit," she told TV Line in June.

Fingers crossed The Breakfast Club does make an appearance on the '80s comedy!
