This week's episode of The Middle was all about the Heck family's greatest fears coming to life. In "Halloween V," Axl deals with the future, Sue is abandoned and Brick starts to date.

The episode begins with Frankie searching for her Halloween candy, which she bought on sale in March, but she can only find her hidden Easter candy. As Brick reveals that he isn't going to trick-or-treat this year, Sue posts her "Sue-ometer" to the fridge to track all the money she needs to raise to pay for college.

Meanwhile Axl is home "studying" for a history paper, but in reality all he is doing is watching Ben Affleck in Pearl Harbor. When his parents propose that he goes to the library he gets angry because he has no idea where it is.

On the actual day of Halloween, Brick has a girl over... Cindy, the girl who found his shoe at the school dance (yes, he lost a shoe at the dance). Despite their awkwardness, things seemed to be going great as they held each other on the couch. It turns sour quickly when Brick decides to go trick-or-treating alone and leaves Cindy at his house.

In Sue's world, she has found a fun way to raise money for college by showing It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown in the Orson pumpkin patch. It is adorable and very festive but no one comes except for Brad, who is dressed as both Danny and Sandy from Grease, which is awesome. After learning that the new cheer coaches stole her idea and showed a scary movie in the graveyard, Brad leaves Sue for the better party.

Switching to the library, Axl finishes his paper using a Ben Affleck movie quote (because Pearl Harbor was historically accurate, obviously) and quickly discovers that he is locked in. As he tries to keep his cool, he starts talking to a statue of William Shakespeare who he names LeBron and assumes was a feather salesman in his life.

While waiting for Brick to return from his solo trick-or-treating adventure, Frankie and Mike make Cindy shrimp, because that is all she says she will eat. He finally comes back and they tell him a secret about dating... men don't get to do what they want. He realizes that he has to hangout with Cindy in order to call it a date.

Back at the pumpkin patch a random man comes to see the movie and Sue is thrilled. They watch the film, eat popcorn and then talk about how great the film is. She tells him not to pay the five-dollar entry fee, but he makes a donation anyway. She discovers that he gave her $50 and she is ecstatic.

In the library, Axl is losing it when he figures out that he is alone with his own thoughts. He talks to LeBron and tells the statue that he is terrified about life after college and what type of job he will have. He is so scared, but manages to fall asleep under a pile of books wearing only his boxers.

The next morning he goes home and asks his parents about his major. They reassure him that he is only a sophomore so he doesn't need to worry yet. It is huge weight off his shoulder. The whole family then spends the morning together eating Easter candy for breakfast... the perfect post Halloween activity.
