Gucci's New Cosmetics Line: A Thorough Review Of The Brand’s Luxurious Products

Gucci recently launched its highly-anticipated first cosmetics line, just in time for the holiday season, which definitely requires a smoky eye and red statement lip. Gucci's creative director, Frida Giannini, joined forces with makeup artist, Pat McGrath, to create one of the most luxuriously glamorous cosmetic collections ever. The brand announced the collaboration earlier this year, reporting Giannini would take the lead on pushing out products for our entire face, including lipsticks, skincare and eyeshadow.

According to Fashionista, this collection was totally worth the wait. When Giannini pulled fabric swatches from the Gucci archives for inspiration, she zeroed in on six anchoring colors, which the brand is calling the "Iconic Six," that run through the line: gold, black, red, bronze, copper, and vivid peacock, ottanio (Italian for teal).

All products in the 200-piece collection are elegantly stamped (both the packaging and makeup itself) with the double G's, which the brand calls "the Guccissima" pattern. Gucci wants you to consider the individual pieces as accessories, so the packaging reflects this. Fashionista reports, all the pieces, which are packaged in shiny black and gold, have a nice heft to them.

Gucci offers a wide array of color choices. There are dozens of eye shadow colors (packaged as singles, duos and quads), five eyeliner pencils, one liquid liner, a volumizing mascara, almost 50 lipstick colors, 18 glosses and 24 nail lacquers. For the face, there are 18 foundation shades with SPF 25, in addition to powders, bronzers, powder blushes, a brush-type concealer and a primer.

Skin care offerings, however, are slim right now. The line offers a cleansing water, toner and lightweight moisturizer, but there is more to come in the future. The products range in price from $29 for a nail polish to $79 for a powder brush, making the line comparably priced to other luxury designer beauty ranges.

Fashionista's beauty editor, Cheryl Wischhover, describes Gucci's lipstick as a winner. "It's a one-swipe-and-done type of formula." Overall, she compares Gucci's makeup collection to its fellow Italian makeup ranges: Armani and Dolce & Gabbana, saying it fits nicely in between Armani's sleek minimalism and D&G's sometimes over-the-top flashiness.
