Chicago Bears Coach Says Jay Cutler Needs To "Play Better" But Will He Bench The Star Quarterback?
After their Sunday Night Football beatdown at the hands of heated NFC North rivals the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman ripped his team and starting quarterback, Jay Cutler. But is he considering benching the quarterback?
Following the 55-14 loss, ESPN reported Trestman saying "He didn't play well enough yesterday, and we didn't play well enough. I'm certain he'd take accountability for that. But it's very clear he did not play well enough yesterday. We can't sugarcoat that. At the same time, we didn't play collectively well enough as a team."
Cutler's game was one to forget; the quarterback threw for one touchdown and 272 yards, completing 22 of his 37 passes, but also threw two interceptions (one that was returned by Packer Casey Hayward for a Green Bay touchdown) and was strip-sacked by former Bear Julius Peppers, leading to an eventual Green Bay touchdown. In 12 career games against the Packers, Cutler is now 1-11 with 22 picks.
As for benching the quarterback, ESPN quoted Trestman saying "I think that it's all [judged] on an individual basis. We haven't even had a chance to look at the game with Jay and get his feedback. Certainly we know that Jay's not comfortable with the way he played yesterday, no doubt about it. It's just an individual basis. I think that we've all got to do better. I know it starts with the quarterback. It always does. But there's a lot of things that have got to [happen] before something like that would be a consideration."
As ESPN reported, even Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker got in on the Cutler trash talking.
With Bleacher Report showing Packers fans in customised Cutler jerseys, CBS reported quite the opposite, with some Bears fans burning their Cutler jerseys:
Those fans will be hoping for a reversal of fortune when the Chicago Bears take on the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago.
