'Doctor Who' Season 9 Plot Details - Steven Moffat Talks New Episodes, 2014 Ratings & More
Did BBC's Doctor Who drop in ratings and viewership in 2014 with season 8 episodes and a new Doctor in Peter Capaldi? According to a new interview with executive producer Steven Moffat, that is not the case at all when you take into consideration online/on-demand viewings as well. He also talked up the new 2015 episode in season, so get ready for some spoilers!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Moffat spoke during Royal Television Society event, discussing the issues of that many have criticized the latest season of Doctor Who and some season 9 details. And by "some," we mean very little. He really only revealed that he was among the many writers working on the new episodes.
According to Moffat, taking into consideration "catch-up viewing," Doctor Who didn't see a drop at all.
"The figures are the same - they're just the same," he said, according to Digital Spy. "If by 'ratings', you mean the number of people who watch the show... they are the same. The headline - boring though it is - is that they've barely changed since Doctor Who came back."
He added: "Since Matt Smith took over Doctor Who - the time I've been doing it - the number of people that watch the show on iPlayer has trebled. The way people watch it has changed. People watch it on catch-up to a much greater degree, but there is no drop-off in the ratings. For the record, [even] if our overnights were our final rating, that would still count as a hit. I would be working hard, even as a Scot, to be disappointed!"
