Hilary Duff is back and better than ever, and her December cover of Health proves it. The 27-year-old singer opened up about her personal life and struggles with husband Mike Comrie in the new issue and explained why she created her newest album.

As the "All About You" singer prepares for the release of her first album in seven years, she is reflecting on her music history, life with son Luca and marital problems, which have made her stronger.

Last January, Hilary and husband Mike separated after 3 1/2 years of marriage, but they have recently been seen together on vacation and holding hands at a Halloween party. Hilary admitted to Health that she's working hard on her relationship with Mike and that they are slowly figuring it out.

"We have a 2-year-old together. We love each other. Obviously it wasn't a rash decision that we made. We really are just trying to figure out how we are the most happy — whether together or apart — and we're doing it as lovingly as possible," Hilary told Health during her cover shoot interview. "We would hang out without Luca; we think it's important to keep a strong relationship no matter if we're married or not married. And we love our son. We both want to fight for happiness."

That being said, the Lizzie McGuire alumna revealed that their time apart has been the most challenging time she has faced, but having time off from her career during the same time period helped her through it.

"I have found that since I had Luca and took a substantial time off, it really helped me. Before, I would make a record and be working on a movie and then do a tour, so I didn't have time to sit and breathe and just be comfortable with me. I got a broken heart during that time, and I had to do a lot of soul-searching. It was rough. It was an emotional two years," she revealed to the publication.

Hilary also opened up about her new record, which has yet to drop.

"I really missed performing. And I missed writing and talking about what I'm going through, what I love," the "Chasing the Sun" singer explained.

In addition to her new album, which will be released sometime in 2015, Hilary is returning to television in the new TV Land show Younger, which premieres in January.

The rest of Hilary's interview with Health can be seen in the December issue, available on stands Friday.
