It's being reported that famed director Mike Nichols, the man who made films such as The Graduate (1967), The Birdcage (1996), and Closer (2004), has died at the age of 83. As the husband to former ABC World News Tonight anchor Diane Sawyer, Nichols was often noted for not only his films but also his material on Broadway. The Hollywood Reporter notes that the president of ABC News, James Goldston, told the staff of Nichols' death earlier this morning.
"I am writing with the very sad news that Diane's husband, the incomparable Mike Nichols, passed away suddenly on Wednesday evening," he said.
The president then added, "In a triumphant career that spanned over six decades, Mike created some of the most iconic works of American film, television and theater––an astonishing canon ranging from The Graduate, Working Girl and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf to Closer, Charlie Wilson's War, Annie, Spamalot, The Birdcage and Angels in America." He later went on to call the director a "true visionary."
Following word of Nichols' unfortunate death, fans took to the Twitter to post their condolences.
CNN reports that Nichols and Sawyer were married for 26 years. The two met when he was 54-years-old, with the legendary news icon becoming his fourth wife.
