Lifetime's upcoming miniseries, Marilyn, has landed its male lead. Grey's Anatomy alum Jeffrey Dean Morgan will be playing Joe DiMaggio in the new four-part miniseries.

The Hollywood Reporter exclusively reported that the Magic City alum would be playing the Yankee's star in Marilyn. Marilyn will be a four-hour miniseries based on J. Randy Taraborrelli's book The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe.

"Morgan will play DiMaggio, Monroe's second husband. When the two met, Monroe was a star-on-the-rise and DiMaggio had already retired from baseball and wanted a wife who would stay at home and raise children," THR explained. "Their nine-month marriage was a dizzying ride of obsession and jealously, sexual fever and the chill of emotional abandonment. It is said to have ended as a result of physical violence-yet the Hall of Famer never stopped loving her."

"As Marilyn descended into the depths of drug and alcohol abuse-and increasing mental instability-it was DiMaggio to whom she reached out. He tried his best to save her but couldn't. Until his own death 37 years later, he had red roses delivered to her grave every week. He never married again," the publication reported.

In October, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Pan Am's Kelli Garner would be playing the iconic character of Marilyn Monroe in the Lifetime miniseries. The cast also includes Susan Sarandon as Marilyn's mother Gladys and Emily Watson as Grace McKee.

Lifetime describes the upcoming four-part series as: "Marilyn is both the personification of sex, whose first marriage ironically collapses because of her frigidity, and a fragile artist who seeks the approval and protection of men. But after tumultuous marriages with Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller, she realizes she has the strength to stand on her own. She becomes the face and voice of an era, yet she wants most of all to be someone's mother and someone's little girl. She's the Marilyn you haven't seen before, the artist who, by masking the truth with an image, gives her greatest performance."
