Arrow Season 3 Spoilers: Laurel Lance Not Hero as Black Canary
Season 3 of Arrow is underway, and one of the biggest points of contention for many fans has been the journey of Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) into the new Black Canary after her sister, Sara Lance, was killed. Some fans are unhappy that Laurel could step into the role of a costumed crime fighter so easily, but executive producer Marc Guggenheim cautions fans to not be so concerned.
"Just because you put on a mask and a costume doesn't mean you're a superhero," he told EW.com. "A mask does not a hero make. We're really at the beginning of Laurel's journey to becoming the Black Canary, not the end by virtue of the fact that she's put on a costume."
This echoes what Stephen Amell said recently on the Arrow After Show. The star said essentially that the show would never ask the fans to make that kind of leap. Guggenheim elaborated further with EW.
"It's not like Arrow, Arsenal [Colton Haynes] or Diggle [David Ramsay] going out into the field," he said. "She gets punched, she gets hit, she gets injured. When she throws a punch, she doesn't always connect. When she jumps off of something, she doesn't always land on two feet. She's a much more rougher and realistic kind of crime fighter."
"I'm loath to even call her a hero at this point because I don't think she's earned that title yet, though she certainly wants to," Guggenheim added. "There's going to be a continuing process of evolution with her despite the fact that she's now in costume."
