Supernatural New Episode Recap: 'Hibbing 911' Brings Back Sheriff Jody Mills
Supernatural aired its new Season 10 episode, "Hibbing 911," on Tuesday night. The episode brought back Sheriff Jody Mills, who is always a breath of fresh air on the series, but this hour was largely filler.
Jody went to a mandatory sheriff's retreat and looked like she wanted to swallow her own tongue the entire time. The situation only got worse when she got stuck with Donna, the sheriff from Minnesota with the heavy accent to boot. Of course, this is Supernatural, so things turned really weird really quickly when bodies started turning up that had been eaten down to the bone.
The culprit of the story turned out to be a gang of vampires, who learned from the sheriff of the town in which the retreat was held. The sheriff had fled their group because he wanted to try to help people instead of eat them. But he had already taught his flock how to use every single part of the victim, and the vamps even started robbing the corpses just to make sure they used everything they could.
It was an interesting twist on vampires, which Supernatural has done to death and beyond at this point. But the entire episode just had that feeling that too many Supernatural episodes have these days. It happened, it was largely irrelevant to the main plot, and now we move onto next week. We got a brief tease at the end (as we always do) with regard to the season-long arc, as Dean said he didn't feel like the Mark of Cain was driving him when he killed the vampires. Of course, this is Supernatural, so things are going to go south in a hurry here.
The episode also established some continuity with two of the more forgettable episodes in the series: Jody's adventures with the vampires from late in Season 9 and Sam and Dean's journey to the weight loss clinic in the middle of Season 9. Both of those were largely forgettable installments, but it was good of the show to keep the minor details in focus.
It was pretty funny to see Donna react to the knowledge that monsters are real, but she took it all in stride. The show almost treats these reveals as a joke now, as Donna learned everything off screen and all we got was a simple, "We good?" from Dean to confirm that she was on board.
Next week is the midseason finale, and the previews at the end of the episode teased that the Mark of Cain would be in full effect. Dean was standing in a room bathed in blood, so here's hoping the episode ends 2014 on a high note for Supernatural.
Notes From Dad's Journal:
- I'm with Dean. You would think the Men of Letters would actually have something on the oldest symbol known to mankind. And what possible benefit could there have been to the transgender werewolf study? And if Volume One was 600 pages, how long is the entire thing? How much is there to say about transgender werewolves?!
- Sam so does not want Dean to hunt because he's afraid the Mark would get stronger.
- I'd like an episode that just follows Alex and her misadventures as a pot-smoking teenager.
- How bad is the Mark of Cain going to get next week?
