Benedict Cumberbatch to Play Marvel's 'Doctor Strange' In Scott Derrickson's Sorcerer Supreme Flick!
After months and months of teasing big stars, an official name is officially attached to the upcoming superhero flick for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Scott Derrickson in the director's chair, actor Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast as the Sorcerer Supreme of Marvel's Doctor Strange.
With the project landing in the Sinister director's hands, the search seemed endless for casting agents to find the right leading man. We also mentioned here that there was a growing wish list of actors, including such high-profile names such as Tom Hardy (Inception), Academy Award winner Jared Leto (Dallas Buyers Club), even Mad Men's Jon Hamm was thrown into the roster. There were even rumors of Joaquin Phoenix (Walk The Line) being approached during the recent San Diego Comic-Con as well.
According to Marvel, the Sherlock actor himself will play Doctor Stephen Vincent Strange. The story follows the ex-neurosurgeon as he struggles to move forward from a horrific car accident. After discovering the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions, Strange trains himself to become the Sorcerer Supreme.
With Jon Spaihts adapting the screenplay, producer Kevin Feige states in his release, "Stephen Strange's story requires an actor capable of great depth and sincerity. In 2016, Benedict will show audiences what makes Doctor Strange such a unique and compelling character."
Marvel previously held a big media event listing their upcoming feature films for Phase 3, including Black Panther, the Infinity War, and Captain Marvel.
