As The Colbert Report is winding down its days and episodes on Comedy Central, many people are curious as to who will be the comedian's first guest when he takes over David Letterman's spot over at The Late Show. And while many might assume people like Jon Stewart or the former host himself would be Colbert's first choice, David Letterman has an idea of who the comedian should actually invite in first –– Russian President Vladimir Putin.

TMZ recently bombarded Letterman outside Washington D.C.'s Kennedy Center while the legendary comedian and late night host was signing some autographs and taking photos.

"Dave, if you could recommend one person for Steve Colbert's first person, who would it be?" Yes, we realize it's a jumbled question but let's give the guy a little break ... maybe he was just star struck. After all, Letterman is pretty legendary. Despite the garbled sentence, the Late Show host got the point.

"First guest?" Letterman asked. After some thought – and picture after picture – Letterman answered with the President of Russia, "Vladimir Putin."

So, what do you think about the 67-year-old's choice? If there's any talk show host that could handle Putin, we imagine Colbert is one of them. Then again, Chelsea Handler already has some history with the President, so once her Netflix show hits the online airwaves that may be an option as well.

The Colbert Report, which premiere back on Oct. 17, 2005, is set to end its days on Comedy Central this coming Dec. 18. Stay tuned to the show until then, Monday - Thursday at 11:30 p.m. following The Daily Show with Jon Stewart
