'Star Trek 3' 2016 Plot SPOILERS: 'Into Darkness' Writer Roberto Orci Officially NOT Director - Ex-'Ant-Man' Helmer Edgar Rumored For Short List
Acclaimed writer and producer Roberto Orci was about to take over the director's chair for the yet-to-be titled Star Trek 3 movie, but this week we learned that he didn't get the job. Reports aren't clear as to whether or not he turned down the job, or something else happened, but for now the Into Darkness scribe is remaining as a producer for the popular Star trek reboot movie franchise, which Orci helped start with director J.J. Abrams. Now more director rumors are starting to spread as the 2016 release date gets closer and closer, and one name has fans very excited: Edgar Wright.
Deadline reports that Orci is out and more directors are being looked at for the coveted role. One big name being thrown around is Edgar Wright, who has a persona land professional relationship with longtime collaborator and star of the Star Trek series, Simon Pegg. Basically, this would be a pretty incredible director for the film!
Orci, who turned down helming the recently announced Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie franchise reboot, has been spending most of 2014 talking up his ideas for Star Trek 3. Clearly the filmmaker will be heavily involved in the process, but we're sorry to see him not in the directing role he was so excited to be in.
So what will we be missing with Orci out and another director taking over?
"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films - especially the 2009 [Star Trek] - was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series," Orci explained while appearing on the Humans From Earth podcast (iTunes link) earlier this year. "They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters than you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."
We believe that Orci will still get a say on the final project, but a new director is being sought for one reason or another. Why do you think this happened? Who do you want to see directing this movie? Let us know in the comments section below!
