Scorpion New Episode Review: 'Revenge' Sends Walter O'Brien Down Dangerous Path
Scorpion took another big step forward this week with its new episode entitled "Revenge." This was Walter O'Brien like we'd never seen him before. He was obsessed, driven, and downright scary. But through the entire experience, we learned a little bit more about what makes him tick.
We've come to know that Walter simply doesn't feel certain emotions. For example, in highly stressful or even dangerous situations, he doesn't feel fear (which is so metal, by the way). His emotional development is also stunted in other areas thanks to his genius, and Walter has reminded Paige, Cabe, and the others time and again that pep talks and motivational speeches don't work on him.
But "Revenge" brought out a new side to Walter. It seems now like his emotions are simmering under the surface and waiting to boil over. It's not that he can't feel these things; he can, he's just not allowing himself to do so.
So when Sylvester, the happy-go-lucky and buoyant member of the team, accidentally set off an explosive device and went into critical condition, Walter went into overdrive. Even Paige remarked that he was on fire during this case, as he took on the roles of the rest of his team, including Sylvester, to catch the thieves. While Toby, Happy, and the rest needed time to cool off, Walter plunged himself into his work.
Walter knew there was nothing he could do to help Sylvester, but he did have a problem to solve, which is what he does best. But despite the hard exterior, we get the sense that something else is inside that brain of his. Much like Gregory House from House or Dr. Cox from Scrubs, you can't help but feel that Walter actually cares, no matter what he might say to the contrary.
That's what made Walter's predicament on the roof so chilling. Make no mistake. He let Javier die. He had a chance to pull him up (or at least try) and he hesitated because this man had put his friend in the hospital. Sylvester gave him an out later on when he calculated Javier would have pulled him over the edge, but Walter didn't know that at the time. We'll need to wait and see how this affects his decisions in the future.
"Revenge" also did a nice job of introducing the supporting character of Simone, who had a personal history with the criminals. Javier and his men had rendered her partner paralyzed seven years earlier, so she was out for revenge on them and was almost as obsessed as Walter. This connected them and she even made a play for Walter at the end, but he decided to instead spend time with Sylvester.
The real problem with this episode for me was Paige. She oscillates between extremely helpful and totally useless depending on the case of the week, and she learned far more toward the latter in "Revenge." She basically served just to sternly tell Walter he needed to feel something, even though that's not how he operates. She does have an interesting situation developing with her ex, so we'll see how that unfolds.
Sylvester continued to bond with Walter's sister, Megan, in the hospital, and he admitted to her that his work was the one place where he felt safe. Now, he doesn't know if he can go back there and he's terrified. This should make for an interesting character development as the rest of the season unfolds should Scorpion choose to go that way.
Several weeks ago, I would have rolled my eyes at Paige saying she was Sylvester's family, but it felt earned this week. Walter passed up a night with a beautiful, intelligent woman to be by Sylvester's side. The entire team was there along with him. These people really do feel like a unit now.
