MLB Hot Stove: David Ortiz Uses Twitter To Troll Former Red Sox Teammate Jon Lester On Day He Is Introduced By Cubs
Boston Red Sox fans aren't happy that beloved former ace Jon Lester recently signed with the Chicago Cubs. And like he always seems to do, Boston golden boy David "Big Papi" Ortiz harnessed the collective mind of the city and spoke for it. He did it by taking the opportunity to tease Lester on his big day.
Right after Lester was introduced at a Cubs press conference, the club unveiled his new Chicago jersey. Lester will wear No. 34 because his old number, No. 31, is retired by Chicago. Guess who wears No. 34 on Boston, where Lester played for more than eight seasons?
That's right, Big Papi.
"Hey @JLester31 if you wanted my number all you had to do was ask jajajaja," Ortiz teased on Twitter, where he has 753,000 followers. But Ortiz made sure the jokes were just in good faith. After all, his former teammate and friend just signed a $155 million contract. Overall, Ortiz was happy for him.
".....best of luck in chicago bro!!!" Ortiz tweeted.
Lester is not the first Cubs star to wear No. 34. Most recently, that honor was bestowed to Kerry Wood, the former phenom that led Chicago to the NLCS in 2003. And he is being paid like a phenom — Lester's $30 million signing bonus is a record, according to ESPN.
This for a pitcher who posted a 9–14 record with a 4.82 ERA as recently as three years ago. Lester has been more solid since, posting 15 wins in 2013 and 16 in 2014. He is also a two-time World Series champion with Boston.
"I'm here to win," Lester said at the press conference, according to the Chicago Tribune. The Cubs haven't won the World Series since 1908.
Ortiz proved last season that his bat is still potent at age 38, when he hit 34 homers and drove in 104 runs. Monday he proved his wit is still sharp too.
