5 Reasons Tilda Swinton, Octavia Spencer, Chris Evans' 'Snowpiercer' Best Comic Book Movie Of 2014 [WATCH]
This past year, we have seen many superheroes and super villains make their way onto the big screen. Delivering the performance of his career, Chris Evans (Captain America 3) joins Oscar winner Tilda Swinton (The Grand Budapest Hotel) and Octavia Spencer (The Help) in Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer, which is the best comic book movie of 2014.
Before 2015 arrives and we watch the new flicks we're most anxious about, let's take a look back on Snowpiercer. As we previously mentioned, the story follows a group of low-class passengers who want to rebel and take over their high-powered train. They have to make their way past the military guards to hijack the first car. But even if they steal the train from the oppressive rich class, will they be able to survive the Ice Age outside?
Here are 5 reasons Snowpiercer beats out all the other comic book movies:
1) It's Not A DC Comics, Or A Marvel Movie
As movie-going audiences, we have been bombarded with Thor, Batman v. Superman, and Captain America: The Winter Solider. We all loved Guardians of the Galaxy, but there's so much more to comics than wearing capes. This movie was based on the creator-owned French graphic novel, Le Transperceneige, by Jacques Lob, Benjamin Legrand and Jean-Marc Rochette,
2) The Cast Itself
Not only do we have Spencer, Swinton, and Hurt in the cast, there's also Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot), and Alison Pill (The Newsroom), and John Hurt (The War Doctor). Kudos to Joon-Ho who didn't use dubbing on Song Kang-Ho and found a creative way to let him speak and act in his original language.
3) The Action Sequences
From the director of the 2006 horror/comedy movie, The Host, Joon-ho captures these violent and bloody action sequences as if actors were performing ballet. Using slow-motion and long takes, we see the action flow smoothly in these stylishly choreographed pieces. You cannot deny how breathtaking these sequences are.
4) Best Performance Of His Career
We have seen Evans in Avengers, plus a second one, Fantastic Four, The Losers, and 2 Captain America movies, plus a third one, but this is a role that asks him to be more than the action stud and the comic relief. Growing a beard and looking like a worn-out homeless bum, the Sunshine actor plays a reluctant hero who doubts his leadership role. His big speech at the end is utterly compelling.
5) An Open-Ending
With an interesting story, the movie closes on a thought-provoking ending. This isn't about building a franchise, just a one-time deal. The ending is about asking you, the viewer, to analyze what you have just seen and come with your own answer about hope and humanity.
