Richard Armitage of The Hobbit movie franchise fame has officially been cast in season 3 of NBC's bloody crime thriller Hannibal as Francis Dolarhyde, A.K.A. the Tooth Fairy killer. Portrayed in the 2002 movie Red Dragon by Ralph Fiennes and the 1986 film Manhunter by Tom Noonan, Armitage is taking on one of the biggest roles in the Thomas Harris literary world. The series' creator, Bryan Fuller, has been teasing Dolarhyde's appearance on the show since his murders were mentioned in the pilot episode, so it looks like we'll be getting an "in person" look at the character with Armitage! (SPOILERS to follow)

"Richard Armitage has joined the cast of NBC's Hannibal," a spokesperson officially revealed to The Wrap this week. According to TV Line, Dolarhyde will show up in episode 8 and will be featured in the last 6 episodes of season 3.

While Dolarhyde is set to appear in season 3, Fuller revealed in the past that he wants season 4 to be the series' Red Dragon season. This means that, if a fourth season is ordered, Armitage has another year or so of work on the show! This news comes from IGN.

What do you think of this casting news? Will Armitage serve as a good Dolarhyde? Let us know what you think of this Hannibal update in the comments section below! We're wondering how Freddy Lounds (Lara Jean Chorostecki) is taking this news right now, though (Red Dragon fans will get his reference)!

While we wait for Hannibal's official season 3 premiere date to be announced, and then arrive, check out a recent interview with the cast and crew from last year's Comic-Con:
