Deflatriots Update: Belichick Denies Knowledge of Under-Inflated Footballs, Patriots Coach 'Shocked'- Raven Player Ball Tampering 'Bad as PEDs' [VIDEO]
The NFL's 'Deflate Gate' or 'The Deflatriots' has an update. New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has said that he had no knowledge of the 11 of 12 game balls being under-inflated until he was told about it on Monday, adding that he was "shocked" by the news. He then left it to quarterback Tom Brady to explain his preferences, and that he has "no explanation for what happened." Baltimore Ravens player Chris Canty has said that DeflateGate is the same as using PEDs and is against the integrity of the game. Either way, Aahead of the Super Bowl against Seattle Seahawks, it still appears that the NFL will have a hard time proving the Patriots did anything illegal.
As reported by ESPN, Belichick told reports that he was "shocked" when he learnt about the footballs on Monday and "had no knowledge of this situation until Monday morning," when ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported that league officials had found that 11 of the 12 footballs used by the Pats were under inflated.
Speaking to the media - where he spent the entire time addressing 'DeflateGate' - he added "I would say I've learned a lot more about this process in the last three days than I knew or have talked about it in the last 40 years that I've coached in this league,'"
"I had no knowledge of the various steps involved in the game balls and process that went through.''
The coach continued saying "In my entire coaching career, I have never talked to any player or staff member about football air pressure," he said. "The footballs are approved by the league and officials pregame, and we play with what's out there. That's the only way that I have ever thought about that."
He added that he understands specialists like kickers and quarterbacks have "certain preferences" when it comes to the footballs they use. Said Belichick, "Tom's personal preferences on his footballs is something he can talk about in much better detail and information than I can possibly provide."
Brady will talk to the media this afternoon.
As The Associated Press say, "The NFL requires balls to be inflated between 12.5 and 13.5 pound per square inch. Under league rules, each team provides its own balls for use on offense. Referees approve the balls more than 2 hours before game time, then keep the balls until they're turned over to ball handlers provided by home teams just before kickoff."
Meanwhile Baltimore Ravens player Chris Canty - according to NBC's Pro Football Talk - accused the Patriots of continually bending the rules, and saying that under inflating the ball was no different than taking PEDs.
"The Patriots are habitual line-steppers," Canty said, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "If the allegations are true, then you are talking about attacking the integrity of our game and I have an issue with that. . . . [W]hat I'm going to say about the deflating of the balls, to me there is no difference than performance-enhancing drugs. You are cheating at that point. You are getting a competitive advantage outside of the rule book and there has to be some sort of consequences for that."
He added that he was most worried about the integrity of the game. "To me, the integrity of the game is the most important thing," Canty continued.
"You want to be successful as a player, but you want to think that you are doing things that are within the rules and that you are out there competing, and it's not, whether it is performance-enhancing drugs or deflated footballs that is out there aiding in your performance."
What do you think? Is Belichick somehow responsible for DefalteGate? Is this being blown way out of proportion?
