'American Sniper' 2015 Movie Leads To Rise In Twitter, Facebook Death Threats Against Muslims - Bradley Cooper, Clint Eastwood Film Causes Civil Rights Controversy
According to a letter sent to movie star Bradley Cooper this week, civil rights organization the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee is claiming Anti-Muslim threats on Facebook and Twitter have seen a rise after the release of his 2015 film, American Sniper. While the organization isn't aiming to boycott the film or asking director Clint Eastwood to pull it or something like that, it looks like the ADC is just trying to draw attention to the negative effects the movie has had, especially on Twitter. According to Deadline, the president of the organization, Samer Khalaf, reached out to the actor to help "reduce the hateful rhetoric."
"A majority of the violent threats we have seen over the past few days are result of how Arabs and Muslims are depicted in American Sniper. We are in receipt of hundreds of violent messages targeting Arab and Muslim Americans from the moviegoers of the film," the letter to the actor stated, according to Film Drunk. "Many of these threats are made through social media forums, such as Twitter and Facebook. The threats advocate for the murder of Arabs, some going so far as to say, 'Great f**cking movie and now I really want to kill some f**kin ragheads.' In another threat a user wrote, 'American sniper makes me wanna go shoot some f**kin Arabs.'"
We can probably assume that Eastwood and Cooper didn't mean for this type of reaction to occur after the film's release, so we'll have to see how they react to this letter from the ADC.
