'American Idol' Phillip Phillips Hell: Files Claims Against Record Label Contract, Hopes To Have Creative Control Of New Music
Phillip Phillips might have gotten his start on American Idol but it seems that the rock star is raging against the machine that built him. The winner of the 11th season of the FOX singing competition is revealing that he wants to get out of his record contract with 19 Entertainment.
According to E! News, Phillip has filed a report with the California Labor Commissioner hoping that this would be able to get him out of the record contract, along with his merchandising, and management agreements with the American Idol company.
Philips told The Hollywood Reporter that while he values his time with the record label, he feels that it is time for the two to part ways.
"I am very grateful for the opportunities provided to me through appearing on American Idol," the "Home" singer told the news site. "The value that the fans and the show have given to my career is not lost on me. However, I have not felt that I have been free to conduct my career in a way that I am comfortable with. I look forward to being able to make my own choices about my career and to being able to make great music and play it for my fans."
While the Idol winner explains that he didn't have creative control over his last album, including not being able to pick the title, a spokesperson for Simon Fuller and 19 Entertainment says that they have helped to nurture Phillips creative side and hope to continue to do so.
"We're very proud of everything we've accomplished together with Phillip, working closely to help nurture his extraordinary talent and advance his career," a rep for the music. "We have always acted in the best interest of Phillip. We will vigorously defend ourselves from any baseless claims to the contrary and from any attempt to interfere with our rights and relationships."
