'The Vampire Diaries' Season 6 Spoilers: Will Caroline's Mother's Death Bring Her and Stefan Together? Plus, Damon and Elena's First Date Together [VIDEO]

Get ready for a somber affair on this week's episode of The Vampire Diaries. When we last left off, it looked like Caroline (Candice Accola) had found a cure for her mother's cancer using vampire blood, but it now seems that the "cure" could only speed up her death that much fast. Get the tissues ready for tonight, Jan. 29, because when we rejoin the Mystic Falls gang Caroline will be preparing for her mother's funeral, while she's still much alive. Executive producer Julie Plec sat down with TV Guide to talk about tonight's episode, Sheriff Forbes's (Marguerite MacIntyre) ultimate demise and what it means for Damon and Elena and Stefan and Caroline.

"She's all over the map having a hard time facing her mom and dealing with the fact that there's an expiration date on her mother's life," Plec explains of how Caroline will deal with her mother's illness. "We find her in this episode with her mom still fully alive, planning the funeral and picking out flower arrangements because she just doesn't know what to do with all this."

But the creator does explain that in the midst of all this heartbreak there will be some happy moments, too, especially with Caroline and Stefan and Elena and Damon.

"We get to see Stefan and Caroline's friendship re-solidify and then confront the feelings they may or may not have for each other," Plec explained. "There's a lot of good, happy stuff going on in the midst of the big s**t storm."

Elena and Damon, on the other hand, will try to take their minds off the tragedy by heading out on their first date together since Elena compelled her memories of Damon away. In a clip Entertainment Weekly posted, Elena and Damon decide to finally go on a dinner and movie date together, but fans will have to tune in to see if these two lovebirds can finally get things right.

The episode will air tonight on The CW at 8 p.m.
