Despite developing feelings for and then losing Tina at Brett's movie premiere last week, Alex still accompanies his new life coach back to Houston gather all of her things to move to L.A. To be fair, Tina is still very supportive of Alex and his career, even suggesting that she, Alex and Peter (the producer) hang out together. Alex brushes this off and is pretty crabby about the whole situation. We see Tina really show a level of intimacy with Alex in the cab ride from the airport, making faces and generally goofing around. Again, Tina is 100% committed to Alex, but will it ever be more than friendship?
We meet Michelle and Tina's parents, who are eccentric in their own ways. Alex is gifted some sort of Mexican Rogain, which her parents say he deserves for all that he's done for Tina. They explain that, according to what Tina has told them, he's her support system and has "been there" for her ... more "friend zone" stuff, am I right, fellas?
Meanwhile, Brett surprises Michelle with a hotel room key so that they can have a night away from the kids. Freaking out about this situation, the storylines cross with Michelle calling Tina to tell her about it. She feels like she can't have sex with him, which has been the couple's main problem this whole season. Tina tries to make her realize that it shouldn't be a big deal, but Michelle is clearly stressed out about having sex with her husband! It gets pretty vulgar, but Tina eventually convinces her sister to go though with it (yes, that is a very depressing way to describe this).
Alex overheard the conversation, which could lead to some issues down the line.
Brett tries to take the pressure off of his wife and away from the situation by suggesting they not have sex. Michelle is relieved, but Brett is obviously not so cool about it, though he keeps it from his wife.
Back in Houston, Alex and Tina go out with some friends for a night of drinking, and the actor is a hit! He really makes an impression on one friend, who offers to dance with him. It's a very cute scene, especially since it feels like a win for Alex. Oddly, Tina is a bit jealous of the attention Alex is getting and grabs her own dance partner. A kind of dance off starts, with hat stealing added in. Eventually, Alex and his dance partner, Pam Watkins, just decide to have some fun and ignore the others.
At the end of the night, Tina ditches her date and ruins Alex's chances of going home with Pam. An argument ensues at a traffic light, which really makes us second-guess these guys' friendship. Later, when Alex is in bed, Tina offers him a hug, thanking him for being her friend.
Though we thought that Brett wouldn't get to have sex with his wife, Michelle brings it up, saying it's important that they do it. What follows, though, is a pretty strange sex scene with a lot of questions and concerns from both sides. After this goes on for a while, Brett freaks out and an argument about the sex they're having. This leads to a very sad realization that they're both in the same boat about having sex with each other. It's strange to think that we were kind of hoping these two would have sex, but this might have been worse than them not doing it! Brett apologizes to Michelle, but admits that he was being truthful while yelling at Michelle. They decide to start couples' therapy, and to not get divorced. This is the first very emotional segment of the series.
There were a ton of emotions running wild in this episode, but what was resolved? Brett and Michelle understand they need therapy but Tina and Alex are still in a confusing relationship. So what did you think of the fourth episode of HBO's new series? Let us know in the comments section below!
