Tina is moving in with Larry, making for a dismal opening segment of this episode. Alex is clearly not too happy to see her leave, but we find out that he's thinking of leaving too. Michelle also says goodbye to her sister, revealing some next-day plans to do some charter school activities with David. It turns out that this will be an overnighter.
Alex's bizarre audition from two episodes ago actually works out and he gets the part of Vlad. Though they asked him to read for the chubby friend, the director saw his audition tape and now he's third bill on the project! He can't get too excited about it though because he needs to speak with Tina, especially since he's flying out to the set that night.
Brett's not having a great day bringing Sophie to school, especially when she ends up hitting him while he tries to get her out of the car with her shoes on. In an adorable conversation between father and daughter, Brett simply asks what Sophie wants and she tells him she wants to go to the beach. Since he's in a new state of mind after last week's episode, he agrees. Brett invites Alex, who reveals to him that he has to "take care of something first."
Alex hitches a ride with Tina's movers, picks up some flowers and discovers Larry and Tina aren't home. Michelle tells him that she's at a hotel, so Alex grabs Tina's bike to ride to Santa Monica.
At the hearing for the charter school, we find out David is going to be running for city council and most likely win next year. With him being so busy, the charter school might not get approved - but Michelle steps up, taking leadership on the project and becoming the new face of the charter school. In a moving speech about her passion for the charter school, Michelle gets the job done and the charter school will probably be her main storyline next season!
This week's montage shows Brett enjoying his time at the beach, Alex riding his bike with a mission, Michelle making eyes at David and Tina not exactly enjoying her time at the hotel to the fullest. Alex tracks her down though, and with a lone blue flower gets his opportunity to thank her. He doesn't stop there though. Alex invites Tina to come live with him in New Orleans while he's filming his new movie. She doesn't accept his offer, saying, "It's better this way." Dejected, Alex joins Brett at the beach.
As they're saying goodbye to each other, Brett reveals to Alex that his passion for his family has returned. Alex informs his best friend that he should be more positive around Michelle and let her know what he just told him. Inspired, Brett drives to Sacramento.
After David admits his feelings for Michelle, they decide not to act on them. But with adjoining rooms connected by a door, the inevitable happens. Season one ends with David and Michelle kissing while Brett gets closer.
