Cookie Monster Crater Photo: NASA Captures Sesame Street Lookalike On Planet Mercury

A Cookie Monster look alike crater has been spotted on planet Mercury in a NASA photo. Scientists noticed the similarities to the Sesame Street character due to the two smaller craters that form the eyes of a giant round crater that resembles a face.

"The superposition of younger craters on older craters (in this case two smaller craters upon the rim of an older crater) can result in landforms that appear to resemble more familiar shapes to human eyes," the scientists wrote. "More generally, the Law of Superposition allows scientists to determine which surface features pre- and postdate others, leading to a better understanding of the geological history of different regions of Mercury's surface."

The researchers of NASA posted the photo titled "Anyone Else Think This Looks Like the Cookie Monster?" on their Flickr page on October 12, 2012. The photo was captured by a Messenger probe who has captured another familiar image back in June on planet Mercury.

Mickey Mouse was a welcomed sight on the planet where craters formed the distinct round ears of the cartoon character. Click here to see the Mickey Mouse crater photo.
