Pop star Lady Gaga announced through her fan website littlemonsters.com on Election Day (Tuesday, Nov. 6) that she plans on donating $1 million to the American Red Cross to aid in the Hurricane Sandy Relief effort. The 26-year-old songstress, born and raised in New York City, would like to help rebuild the city that shaped her into the successful and unique musical artist that she is today.

Gaga posted this supportive message on her official blog on Tuesday:

"Today I pledge 1 million dollars to New York & The American Red Cross for Hurricane Sandy Relief. If it wasn't for NYC: the Lower Eastside, Harlem, the Bronx and Brooklyn, I would not be the woman or artist that I am today. New York is relentless ambition, a drive to succeed, a place where there is a natural pursuit of diversity through compassion. Please accept this gift on behalf of myself, my parents Joe and Cynthia, and my sister Natali; with our deepest gratitude New York for raising us. Thank you for helping me build my spirit. I will now help you rebuild yours. Sincerely, Lady Gaga and The Germanottas."

Lady Gaga is currently overseas playing shows for her worldwide "Born this Way Ball" 2012-2013 tour, but the "You and I" star has constantly offered her thoughts and condolences to those affected by the devastations of Hurricane Sandy through Twitter:

@ladygaga: "i'll be there as soon as i can to help my old neighborhood. I'm on tour + can't let my fans down," she tweeted on Nov. 3. "I want to help with my hands with all of u... east coast how are you holding up? How are you New York? Staying strong i hope, thinking of you all the time. Can't even watch news feed."

A "Coming Together" marathon broadcasted live on Friday, Nov 2 (featuring popular acts including Bruce Springsteen and Bon Jovi) helped to raise a whopping $23 million to go towards hurricane relief efforts. The cast of the "Jersey Shore" is also set to host a live Hurricane Sandy fundraising event on MTV on Nov. 15.
